With the full length, Return To The 37th Chamber dropping April 14th, El Michels Affair releases another flawless two sider to hold us over.
Side A’s cover of Tearz is as much an homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it is to the Wu-Tang Clan track. The song starts as a glazed over cover of “after laughter, comes tears” with Shannon Wise of The Shacks singing Wendy Rene’s timeless mantra. Halfway through, the mood dramatically shifts and the drums and organ that drive the original Rza sample, take over. A dubbed out Lee Fields taps in like only he can, and the song spirals into outer space.
Side B finds El Michels Affair dipping into the deeper side of the Wu catalog with Raekwon’s Verbal Intercourse. Mixing the grimy, gritty production aesthetic of the original with elements of dubbed out reggae, El Michels Affair once again pushes the definition of a “cover” and truly makes it a tune of their own.

This is Hip Hop for me. Big L was killed on february 15 1999, 18 years ago.
Mainly known among beatheads and diggers for his huge breakbeat track Scrabble used by J Dilla and many others, belgian musician and composer René Costy (1918-1997) was a singular man. A reputed classical violinist and music teacher on the one hand, a curious jazz cat on the other. A business man and control freak, but an artist and free spirit as well. In 1962, René Costy starts working for RTBF writing countless scores for radio shows and television series before recording a series of library music LPs for specialized labels like Editions Montparnasse (Paris) and Selection Records (Brussels).
Twenty years after his passing SDBAN Records are releasing a compilation featuring 28 tracks selected from a catalogue of 400 tracks from the virtuoso, versatile and insatiable artist, including 12 unreleased tracks.
René Costy – Expectancy will be available as deluxe edition 2CD incl. 32 page booklet and gatefold 2LP on 180gr vinyl on March 3.
Roy Roberts began to cut records in the mid-60s, mostly as a session man. The death of Otis Redding inspired him to step up to the mic with a song dedicated to the late crooner. The record was released on Nina Simone’s label and backed by an ace studio band. Roy followed this effort with a string of 45s that carried him well into the 70s. He played with luminaries as Eddie Floyd, Stevie Wonder, and Otis Redding, while fronting his own band, The Roy Roberts Experience.
This 17-track (11 on vinyl) compilation is a long overdue collection of singles from legendary Tennessee-raised bluesman Roy Roberts.
Roy Roberts Experience available on vinyl and digital through Perfect Toy Records on february 24.
Milan-based Schema Records reissues a rare title from the series International Hi-Fi, a Fonit’s sublabel active during the 70s. Italian composer Sandro Brugnolini, one of the first Italian composers to record music produced with the ARP 2600synthesizer, is known to many for his famous collaboration with Stefano Torossi, with whom he recorded the cult LP Feelings, re-released last year. Stylistically the LP presents an interesting blend of jazz-funk and electronic music, a deeply evocative library music album.
Originally released on Fonit International Hi-Fi UST 7010, 1973 this vinyl LP reissue includes a bonus CD complete with back liner notes written by composers Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini.
